Red Dead Redemption 2 Geology for Beginners is a Stranger Mission that can be started once you reach Chapter 2 of the video game.

Geology for Beginners is very similar to Smoking and Other Hobbies, meaning that in order to complete it, you have to find a series of collectibles known as Rock Carvings.

RDR2 Geology for Beginners; however, is much shorter because there are only 10 Rock Carvings you need to find.

Since exploration is one of the best parts of the game, why not looking for them while hunting or trying to find other collectibles such as Cigarette Cards, Orchids, Dinosaur Bones, Dreamcatchers, Chests or Loot Boxes?

The Stranger responsible for Geology for Beginners side-mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 is Francis Sinclair. He is located north-west of Strawberry, in a cabin just like the one below.

Meet Francis Sinclair, the Stranger who unlocks Geology for Beginners

Approach this curious character and he will immediately tell you that he is looking for some Rock Carvings or Rock Faces. Although he won’t tell you why.

Indeed, a stranger fellow this Francis Sinclair.

Anyways, since these RDR2 collectibles are required for Total Completion, let’s start looking for them.

First, make sure you check our Red Dead Redemption 2 Rock Carvings Locations Guide, for a detailed map showing the exact locations of all collectibles. You can also see where Francis Sinclair can be found in case you don’t know where to look for him.

Next, visit each of the location marked on our map, and inspect the Rock Carving. Arthur will mark the coordinates in his journal, then you can visit any Post Office and send them to Francis.

You can do it for all coordinates at the same time, or as you find them. Simply approach the clerk, press Right on your D-pad to send mail and then select the coordinates you want to send.

Rewards:

When you mail a specific number of coordinates you will receive a reward. These rewards are listed below, but keep in mind that at least 24 in-game hours must pass in order to get them in the mail at the Post Office.

  • For mailing the coordinates of 1 Rock Carving – Kentucky Bourbon and $10
  • For mailing the coordinates of 5 Rock Carvings – Rock Statue
  • All Rock Carvings coordinates mailed – Francis Sinclair’s Invitation Letter.

You receive Francis Sinclair’s Invitation Letter after you mail the stranger all Rock Faces coordinates

The moment you receive Francis Sinclair’s Invitation Letter, read it and return to his cabin north-west of Strawberry.

Approach the house and you will meet a woman with a baby. According to her, she is Tom’s Sinclair wife and the little baby is named Francis!

Tom, her husband is dead, while Francis is only a few months old. So, who was the Stranger that asked you to find the Rock Carvings?

Regardless, do not leave Tom’s Sinclair house without the Old Brass Compass on the table!
