An Honest Mistake is a Red Dead Redemption 2 story mission available in Chapter 3 of the video game published by Rockstar Games for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
You can play An Honest Mistake in Red Dead Redemption II after you complete The New South story mission; however, you also need to finish The Course of True Love Part 2 or American Distillation. Any of these two along with The New South will allow you to unlock An Honest Mistake.
Because An Honest Mistake is quite long and because it involves several shootouts during which you have to maintain a high accuracy rate; it’s a good idea to save the game before starting it.
This way you can replay it with your current loadout in case you miss the Gold Medal and fail to complete the goals listed below.
Finally, make sure you stock up on tonics and consumables that allow you to freely use Arthur’s Dead Eye.
When you’re ready to start An Honest Mistake, look for Molly’s icon (MO) at Clemens Point.

- Finish with at least 80% accuracy
- Complete the mission without consuming any health items
Walkthrough:
When you approach Molly O’Shea (pictured below) at Clemens Point, you’ll trigger a cutscene during which Uncle interrupts you.

The old cowboy has a tip he wants to sell to you, about a wagon carrying payroll. Obviously, he wants you to rob the said wagon and share the reward with him.
Luckily for you, Charles and Bill will help you; so mount your horse and follow the three gang members to the crossroads where the wagon should appear.
Equip your bandana from the items menu, and wait for the wagon to arrive. The moment your partners stop the payroll wagon, check the chest in the back (also pictured).

As you count the money, you’ll be interrupted by several goons trying to stop your robbery. Jump on your horse and follow Uncle, Charles, and Bill. This will be a rather long ride, so ignore the goons following you and just stay close to your partners.
Obviously, you can also opt to take out some of them, if you wish, scoring several headshots on the way.
Eventually, you’ll reach a house, and you’ll have to take cover inside a small barn. Make sure, that you pick your weapons from your horse, though.
As you wait in the barn, the night comes and you’ll have to remain hidden while the owners of the house will check the barn. Unfortunately, though, Charles will give up your positions, thus the guards will surround the barn.

Gold Medal Goal Tip: The last three Gold Medal requirements now become a priority. From the start, you are not allowed to consume any health items, but you can consume tonics to boost your Dead Eye. Keep it active as long as you can and use a rifle to headshot your enemies one by one. They will come in waves, so make sure you don’t take unnecessary risks and remain in cover all the time.
Move from one side to another scoring head-shots
Move often as your enemies will surround the barn from all sides. When the barn is on fire, try to remain inside as much as you can, scoring headshots.
Even after Uncle asks you to follow him into the nearby woods, you should delay and keep killing the guards that spawn. When the area is clear, head to the woods behind you and hide behind the large rock with Uncle.
Now, wait until the guards walk past you, then take them out silently from behind while remaining crouched.
Gold Medal Goal Tip: During this sequence pay attention to Uncle and help him defeat his opponent. If the guards spot you, you’ll miss the first Gold Medal requirement, even if you shoot them. The goal here is to let Uncle attack one of the guards.
Once the two guards have been neutralized, run towards Charles and Bill, and help them clear the area, scoring additional headshots on the remaining enemies.

The mission ends when you kill the last guard in the area, and you’ll receive your share from this robbery.
Completing An Honest Mistake is a requirement for unlocking The Iniquities of History stranger mission and Preaching Forgiveness as He Went story mission.
