But how do you know when you earn and when you lose honor points?

This question has a simple answer. By knowing the consequences and the results of your actions during a chance encounter.

RDR2 Wilderness Chance Encounters

Attacking Predators

Sequence Description: Someone is attacked by several predators.

Results & Consequences: If you wish to earn 10 honor points, make sure you save the victim. You will lose 10 if you watch how he/she is killed, 5 if you don’t act and 20 if you save him/her and then kill him/her.

Camping Stranger

Sequence Description: A poor woman joins you while you camp in the wilderness. She asks you to let her spend the night at your camp.

Results & Consequences: 5 honor points are earned for letting the woman join your camp. Keep in mind that you will lose 2 if you send her away and 10 if you kill her.

Alternatively, if you allow the woman to stay, but then antagonize her, you will lose 5 points.

Trapped

Sequence Description: While exploring you fall into a hole in the ground, and then a bunch of strangers ambush you.

Results & Consequences: Climb out of the hole.

Mauled by Predators

Sequence Description: A predator is mauling a stranger.

Results & Consequences: You will earn 2 RDR2 honor points for each of the following actions: scare the predator, give the stranger a medicine, give the stranger some whiskey or kill the victim if you are asked to do so.

For leaving or not intervening, you will be penalized with 5 points.

Burning Corpses

Sequence Description: Starting Epilogue 1, at Coots Chapel you might meet a man who is burning bodies instead of burying them.

Results & Consequences: Let the man be or you will lose 15 honor points for killing him.

Horse Thief

Sequence Description: A stranger asks for your help, then steals your horse.

Results & Consequences: You will earn 5 honor points for helping the man, but you also need to stop him from leaving with your steed.

Buying Weapons

Sequence Description: Some outlaws try to buy a wagon full of weapons.

Results & Consequences: Act as you please but don’t forget to loot the chests in the wagon.

Murfrees Camp Attack

Sequence Description: While camping in the Murfrees/Skinners territories you are attacked

Results & Consequences: Act as you please as there are no consequences. The sequence has 2 alternatives.

Variant 1: The attackers will only warn you, then leave.

Variant 2: You are attacked.

Bear Trap

Sequence Description: A stranger asks for help because his foot was caught in a bear trap.

Results & Consequences: You’ll lose 20 points if you watch the man die. If you help him you gain 10 points and an additional 5 for handing over some whiskey.

If you leave, you will lose 2 points. Should you decide to save the stranger then kill him, you will lose an additional 20 points. Another honor point for stealing his horse and 2 for stealing from him, even if you help him.

Murfrees Boat Attack

Sequence Description: Several Murfrees, drop a body in the lake.

Results & Consequences: Act as you please as there are no consequences.

Wanted Man Transport

Sequence Description: Several bounty hunters transport a wanted stranger.

Results & Consequences: 5 points are awarded for turning the stranger in, and 2 are lost for killing him.

If you free the wanted stranger, he might tell you about a robbery you can commit nearby.

Murfrees Campfire Attack

Sequence Description: Several Murfrees attack you while investigating a campfire.

Results & Consequences: Act as you please as there are no consequences.

Drunk Stories

Sequence Description: A drunk stranger asks you to join him by his fire and give him some whiskey.

Results & Consequences: If you accept, he will offer you some info about Fort Riggs.

Botanist

Sequence Description: A stranger is very interested in a plant.

Results & Consequences: Talk to him and he will deliver some useful information on the plant he studies.

Gang Coach Robbery

Sequence Description: A rival gang is trying to rob a coach.

Results & Consequences: The maximum number of honor points (10) is earned by saving the victims. Assuming you take action but the victims die, you will earn only 2 points.

If you don’t intervene and the passengers die you will lose 10 Red Dead Redemption 2 honor points; while 5 will be lost for leaving the area.

Assuming you intervene, you will be able to loot several collectibles from the lockbox inside the coach.

Saving Hostages

Sequence Description: A stranger is asking to save his wife from a shack where she is being held captive.

Results & Consequences: You earn 10 honor points for saving the victim.

For the following actions you will lose 10 honor points/each: kill the victim, kill the person asking for help or watch how the victim is getting killed.

If you decide to help the victim and then kill her, you will be penalized with 20 points.

Gold Fever

Sequence Description: A stranger is looking for gold in the river.

Results & Consequences: If you are patient and wait, he will find a gold nugget. Steal it and you will lose 2 honor points.

Tracking Hunter

Sequence Description: A hunter is tracking a wild animal.

Results & Consequences: If the animal is a Grizzly Bear, and you manage to save the hunter, you earn 5 honor points. 20 points are lost if you save then kill the stranger, and 1 point for looting the corpse.

Prison Break

Sequence Description: Several prisoners kill their guards using pickaxes.

Results & Consequences: For every lawman, you kill you will lose 8 honor points.

Federal Wagon

Sequence Description: Several Lemoyne Riders are trying to steal goods from a federal wagon on the road.

Results & Consequences: Intervene and stop them to earn 5 honor points. Kill the driver or steal the wagon and you will lose 10 points or 1 point for the latter action.

Murfrees Transporters

Sequence Description: Several Murfree gang members transport some dead bodies, but one of the victims is alive.

Results & Consequences: For this chance encounter, make sure you save the victim and you will win 10 points. If you don’t, you’ll lose 5.

Horse Race Challenge

Sequence Description: You are challenged by a rider and you need to get first to the closest landmark.

Results & Consequences: If you accept the race and hit your opponent you will lose 2 points. If you agree and kill him after that, you are panelized with 10 points.

Family Rivals

Sequence Description: A Gray or Braithwaite family member is chased by the rival family.

Results & Consequences: Act as you please as there are no major consequences.

Escort the Woman

Sequence Description: A woman is found after her horse dies, and she asks you to escort her back to her home.

Results & Consequences: For this scenario, if you help the woman you gain 10 honor points. You will lose 10 for killing her and 2 for ignoring the victim.

You will also lose 5 for terrorizing her.

Wagon Guardian

Sequence Description: A drunk stranger crashes his wagon and asks you to watch over his goods while he looks for help in the town.

Results & Consequences: 2 honor points are awarded for agreeing to help, and 2 are lost for refusing or stealing from the wagon if you don’t accept to help.

You can also lose 5 if you agree to help but steal from the wagon. Very close to the wagon is a lockbox which contains valerian root. Feel free to take it.

Lemoyne Executors

Sequence Description: A bunch of Lemoyne Riders, are ready to execute federal employees.

Results & Consequences: Save the victims to earn 10 points. Only for intervening you will earn 2 points, while 5 are lost for watching how the feds are killed.

Chasing Fussar

Sequence Description: Several Fussar’s goons are chasing 2 islanders.

Results & Consequences: Save the victims to earn 5 honor points.

Freezing to Death

Sequence Description: While exploring you find several villagers killed by the cold weather.

Results & Consequences: In the small camp you can find a document.

Murfrees Kidnap

Sequence Description: A woman is kidnapped by two Murfrees.

Results & Consequences: During this chance encounter you will gain 10 honor points for saving the woman and an additional 5 for taking her home. If you agree to take her home but fail to do so, you will lose 5 points.

The same amount of points is lost for not freeing her after you save her. 10 points are lost for not intervening and 20 for saving her just so you can kill her yourself.

The Swimmer

Sequence Description: A naked stranger appears when you try to catch some fish in RDR2.

Results & Consequences: Greet him and he will share a great spot to catch some big fish.

Criminal Looter

Sequence Description: A criminal is looting dead bodies.

Results & Consequences: Act as you please as there are no consequences.

Criminal Transport

Sequence Description: Several outlaws are attacking a prisoners’ wagon, freeing one of their own.

Results & Consequences: Act as you please as there are no consequences.

The Safe

Sequence Description: Two outlaws try to open a locked safe.

Results & Consequences: Wait until they open the safe then claim the loot.

Wounded Rider

Sequence Description: A rider falls off a horse and asks to be taken to a doctor immediately.

Results & Consequences: During this chance encounter make sure you hurry up and you may gain 10 points if the stranger survives.

If you kill the man you will lose 5 points.

Tied-up Victim

Sequence Description: A rider is carrying a tied-up victim who asks for help.

Results & Consequences: Save the victim to earn 10 honor points, or lose 5 for not intervening.

For saving but not freeing the victim immediately you lose 5 points. Additionally, if you opt to save the victim and kill her later you will be penalized with 20 points!

Moonshine Camp

Sequence Description: Two Red Dead Redemption 2 strangers offer rewards for helping them collecting plants.

Results & Consequences: Use your Eagle Eye to spot the plants. For helping them you will get 2 honor points and a chest.

Shackled Prisoner

Sequence Description: A prisoner wearing shackles asks you to set him free.

Results & Consequences: Shoot the chains to earn 5 points. Once you free him, you can lasso the prisoner and turn him to get the bounty.

Laramie Gang Rustlers

Sequence Description: Several Laramie gang members kill cows.

Results & Consequences: In this RDR2 chance encounter you get 2 honor points only by intervening. 10 additional points are awarded for dealing with the rustlers and saving the ranchers.

If you save the ranchers and kill them after, you lose 20 points; while 5 points are lost if you stand and watch without acting.

The Lost Man

Sequence Description: A lost stranger asks you to take him to the closest town.

Results & Consequences: Besides the fact that you will hear a story, you will also get 5 honor points for helping.

Starting Chapter 6, you will lose 2 points for refusing the stranger.

The Lost Friend

Sequence Description: A RDR2 stranger lost a friend, and he needs your help.

Results & Consequences: Head to the marked area and use your Eagle Eye to find the lost friend. Unfortunately, he is dead.

If you head back to the quest-giver and tell him the news you will earn 5 honor points. If you refuse to help the stranger you will lose 2.

Poisoned Man

Sequence Description: A man gets sick after eating a poisoned herb. He needs medicine.

Results & Consequences: The herb the stranger ate is nearby. For this chance encounter, you can earn 5 points if you help the man right away, and lose 5 for ignoring him.

You can also lose 5 points simply by standing by and watching the man die. Finally, you can lose 20 points for saving and then shooting the man.

Help Bill

Sequence Description: Several bounty hunters captured Bill.

Results & Consequences: Besides the fact that you will be able to loot multiple valuables in the camp; you will get 5 honor points for helping Bill.

Refuse and you will lose 2 points.

Target Practice

Sequence Description: Lemoyne Riders are practicing their shooting skills.

Results & Consequences: Act as you please as there are no consequences.

Ambush on the Road

Sequence Description: At night you are ambushed on the road by a rival gang.

Results & Consequences: Act as you please as there are no consequences.

Poisoned by Snake

Sequence Description: A snake bites an RDR2 stranger. The victim needs your help.

Results & Consequences: If you manage to save the man’s life you warn 20 honor points. For ignoring or watching him die you lose 5 points.

Finally, for helping then killing the victim you are penalized with 20 points.

Stone Skipping

Sequence Description: A boy is skipping stones.

Results & Consequences: Greet him and you will hear an interesting story. This Red Dead Redemption 2 chance encounter may trigger again, years later, during Epilogue 1.

KKK Ceremony

Sequence Description: A new member enters the KKK (Ku Klux Klan).

Results & Consequences: 2 honor points are awarded for interrupting the ceremony.

KKK Dispute

Sequence Description:  KKK (Ku Klux Klan) members are arguing.

Results & Consequences: 2 honor points are awarded for interrupting the dispute.

KKK Cross Ceremony

Sequence Description:  KKK (Ku Klux Klan) members are trying to raise a cross.

Results & Consequences: 2 honor points are awarded for interrupting the ceremony.

Best Marksman

Sequence Description:  A stranger who enjoys target practice wants to wage against you on who is the best marksman.

Results & Consequences: Dead Eye is a huge advantage here, so use it. Keep in mind that you lose 2 points for cheating and 5 for robbing him.

If you lose and try to walk away, or kill him, another penalty of 5 honor points applies.

If you win you might meet the stranger again and he will bet more against you. In case you don’t want the money and leave the encounter area, you will earn even more honor points.

Skinners Post Attack

Sequence Description: The Skinners already attacked a campsite.

Results & Consequences: This chance encounter has two versions available. Both of them are available after you reach Epilogue 1.

Variant 1: You find a scalped man in the camp. End his life to earn 5 honor points.

Variant 2: You find a living dog next to his dead master. If you kill the dog you will lose 5 honor points.

Fighting Skinners

Sequence Description: The Skinners are attacking a camp as you approach.

Results & Consequences: Also available after you reach Epilogue 1, this Red Dead Redemption 2 chance encounter has the following consequences based on all existing actions.

2 honor points are awarded for intervening and 5 for saving the victims. 5 points are lost for simply watching the victims getting killed.

Skinners Wagon Attack

Sequence Description: The Skinners already attacked a wagon killing both the passenger and the driver.

Results & Consequences: Act as you please as there are no consequences. The chance encounter triggers after reaching Epilogue 1.

The Prison Wagon

Sequence Description: A prisoner inside a wagon is asking for help.

Results & Consequences: You can earn 10 points for saving the prisoner but you will also lose 5 points for each lawman killed.

The Stuck Rider

Sequence Description: A stranger needs your help for removing an object from his horse’s hoof.

Results & Consequences: If the horse kicks the rider, he will die and it isn’t much you can do.

If the horse runs, you can earn 5 honor points for bringing him back.

If you don’t agree to help, you’ll lose 2 points. An additional 10 points can be lost if you agree to help then kill the rider.

Murfrees Torturing

Sequence Description: Tied on a tree, a stranger is tortured by two Murfrees.

Results & Consequences: Intervene and gain 2 points, then untie him for an additional 10.

If you stand and watch you will lose 5 points, similar to the amount lost for ignoring the victim.

Train Robbery

Sequence Description: A train is robbed by a gang and the victims are all lined up.

Results & Consequences: 2 points are earned for acting against the gang and 5 are lost for watching how they are executed.

The Hanged Man

Sequence Description: You see a man hanged recently.

Results & Consequences: Most of the times you will be ambushed while looking at the poor fellow.

Laramie’s Wagon Robbery

Sequence Description: The Laramie gang is trying to rob a wagon while threatening its owners.

Results & Consequences: Save the victims to earn 10 honor points or watch them getting killed to lose 10.

Ride away and you will lose 5 points. Save the victims then kill them yourself to lose 20 points.

Woman Under A Horse

Sequence Description: A horse falls on a woman who needs help.

Results & Consequences: As you’ve probably guessed this chance encounter might be a trap. Or not.

If it’s not a trap you can earn 5 points for helping and another 5 for taking her home. Refuse and you lose 5. If you agree to take her home but fail, you will again lose 5 points. Furthermore, if you kill her while she is under the horse you will be penalized with 10 points. Finally, 20 points will be lost for saving then killing her.

If it’s a trap and you kill the woman just because you know it’s a trap, you will lose 5 points.

Naked Wild Man

Sequence Description: A naked stranger claims he grew up with the wolves in Roanoke Ridge.

Results & Consequences: If you kill him you will lose 2 points. If you follow him to the den and kill the wolves you will lose 2 points.

Assuming you wait and meet him two times, he will take you to his den where you can find various items and collectibles.

The Wrecked Boat

Sequence Description: You find a small wrecked boat washed ashore.

Results & Consequences: Simply collect the items around it and the Bonnie MacFarlane.

Friendly Duel

Sequence Description: A gunslinger challenges you to a friendly duel.

Results & Consequences: Accept the challenge to gain honor points; refuse or kill the gunslinger to lose honor points.

Stolen Wagon

Sequence Description: You encounter a stranger whose wagon has been stolen by outlaws.

Results & Consequences: Help the stranger retrieve their wagon for honor points, or ignore them and lose honor points.

Distressed Miner

Sequence Description: A miner is trapped in a collapsed mine and needs your help to escape.

Results & Consequences: Rescue the miner to gain honor points, ignore the miner or cause further harm to lose honor points.

Animal Attack

Sequence Description: A stranger is being attacked by a wild animal (bear, wolf, cougar).

Results & Consequences: Save the stranger from the animal attack to gain honor points, or ignore the situation and lose honor points.

Lost Child

Sequence Description: A child is lost and asks for your help to find their family.

Results & Consequences: Help the child find their family for honor points, or ignore the child and lose honor points.

The Drunk Stranger

Sequence Description: A drunk stranger needs your help getting back to town.

Results & Consequences: Help the stranger back to town for honor points, or ignore them and lose honor points.

The Cheater

Sequence Description: You catch someone cheating in a game of poker.

Results & Consequences: Expose the cheater to gain honor points or ignore the situation and lose honor points.

The Accused

Sequence Description: A stranger claims to have been falsely accused of a crime and asks for your help.

Results & Consequences: Help prove the stranger’s innocence for honor points or ignore the situation and lose honor points.
