Genshin Impact Chongyun Build Guide: Best Artifacts, Weapons

Genshin Impact Chongyun Build

Claymore-wielding characters in Genshin Impact generally have greater physical damage, damage multipliers, and higher interruption ability than other melee weapons like swords. This however comes at the cost of slow attacks.

Genshin Impact’s character roster offers a wide array of Claymore characters to pick for your party. Creating a good team synergy is a big selling point for many RPG players and this factor makes Genshin Impact’s team mechanics very attractive for such players.

Genshin Impact’s character roster offers a wide array of Claymore characters to pick for your party. Creating a good team synergy is a big selling point for many RPG players and this factor makes Genshin Impact’s team mechanics very attractive for such players.

One of these claymore-wielding characters is the 4-star Chongyun. The ideal usage for this icy exorcist is as a Cryo sub-DPS. Chongyun has a unique skill that converts all his physical damage into Cryo damage. This skill makes him seem very complicated to fit in a team comp and do well.

With that being said, let’s get right into this Chongyun Guide.

Who Is Chongyun In Genshin Impact

Chongyun, as was previously noted, is a 4-star Cryo character. He was raised in an exorcist family. He is an upbeat, respectable young man who loves sweets. Chongyun is an exorcist, but he has yet to exorcize a spirit or even witness one with his own eyes because his enormous positive energy terrifies any around spirits.

Chongyun has never genuinely lived a normal life due to his condition and family’s employment. He consequently has very limited social skills.

In Genshin Impact, Soma Saito provided his Japanese voice, and Beau Bridgland provided Chongyun’s English dub.

Best Chongyun Builds In Genshin Impact

Chongyun’s unique skill makes him incompetent with any raw physical damage teams. But if you make a build around this ability, in a melt or freeze team, and with the right claymore, you can deal massive amounts of damage.

Let’s look at some builds that synergize very well with Chongyun.

Best Weapons On Chongyun

Moving on to Chongyun’s weapon options, he can use many weapons, so let’s go down the list.

Chongyun has two expensive options for his weapons, the first of which is Wolf’s Gravestone.

Wolf’s Gravestone

This is an amazing claymore for Chongyun in multiple situations. Considering Chongyun can opt for Elemental Mastery stats rather than Physical Attack stats. Having the large base attack and bonus attack percent from this weapon covers a large portion of his optimal stat spread, especially if you would like to opt for Elemental Mastery-focused builds whether for shatter Chongyun or melt Chongyun.

Additionally, the teamwide attack bonus from Gravestone’s passive is amazing for just about any of his viable teams, though it does have a decent amount of downtime.

Wolfish Tracker

This skill gives a 20% increase in ATK. All party members’ ATK is increased by 40% for 12 seconds when they are hit by attacks against enemies with less than 30% HP. only once every 25 – 30 seconds.

Redhorn Stonethresher

via Celvne

Chongyun’s other expensive option is Redhorn Stonethresher. This claymore has an absurdly high crit damage bonus. This weapon only works best when Chongyun can viably output his damage.

This makes it significantly stronger in shatter-freeze teams than in other teams where Chongyun isn’t the main carry. It’s still a pretty good weapon on him overall, just as it is for any DPS claymore user.

Gokadaiou Otogibanashi

The Gokadaiou Otogibanashi is Redhorn Stonethresher’s passive skill. It buffs your DEF and normal and charged attack DMG. It changes upon every refinement level.

Here are the details about the buffs at every level:

Serpent Spine

Serpent Spine is also unsurprisingly a very strong option on Chongyun. Overall at refinement level 5, with max stacks outperforms every other weapon in the game for Chongyun’s personal damage, but it does not provide much more than personal damage output, so it’s only really viable in teams where he is the carry.

Even then, with four piece blizzard strayer, it can be argued that Redhorn would still be stronger in most situations considering how much more unconditional it is than the Serpent Spine.

Wavesplitter

This skill increases your damage from all sources namely your Normal Attacks, Elemental Skill, and Elemental Burst DMG. This buff takes effect every 4 seconds of taking no damage and can stack up to 5 times. Taking damage will remove 1 stack of this buff.

For all Corrosive DMG, you will only lose a stack from the initial hit because corrosive DMG does not count as suffering several hits.

The details of this buff vary from one refinement level to another, here is a table with the details:

Sacrificial Greatsword

This not only provides Chongyun with a lot of energy recharge and energy circulation with its passive. It also allows him to frontload a lot of his damage by abusing his A4 passive with the skill cooldown reset. This can prove extremely strong for pretty much any Chongyun playstyle overall.

Composed

This weapon’s skill has a 40% chance to end its CD (cooldown). This can only occur every 30 seconds. These numbers, however, are at refinement level 1, the percentage chance can increase to 80% and the minimum time it can occur after can decrease to 16 seconds on refinement level 5.

Lithic Blade

via Reddit

Another very notable 4-star weapon. With a few stacks of its passive, it becomes one of Chongyun’s best weapons for personal damage, and it’s very easy to proc the passive considering Chongyun himself is from Liyue and at least one other character in the team is from Liyue for example Xiangling, Shenhe, Yelan, Xingqiu, etc.

Lithic Axiom: Unity

This skill grants every character from Liyue that equips this weapon a 7% ATK increase plus a 3% CRIT Rate increase. This effect can stack up to 4 times.

Honorable Mentions

Akuoumarou and Luxurious Sea-Lord are also excellent weapons for boosting Chongyun’s burst damage for comparable reasons. Akuoumarou enables Chongyun to concentrate fairly significantly on his burst damage if your team’s composition tends to favor high-cost bursts.

Otherwise, Luxurious Sea-Lord, if it is available, will be advised more because, save for unusual circumstances, it performs identically to Akuoumarou even at the maximum team energy cost.

Honorable mentions include:

  • Skyward Pride for its good energy recharge coverage and decent passive.
  • The Unforged for the large amount of ATK it provides to Chongyun.
  • Blackcliff Slasher is essentially the budget version of Redhorn and Serpent Spine.

If you have none of these aforementioned weapons unlocked, Prototype Archaic is your strongest and most well-rounded option out of all the free-to-play craftable claymores.

Best Artifacts On Chungyun

Chungyun has lots of acceptable artifact options depending on how you decide to play him. All of them have the potential to bring out the best of what you need from him.

Noblesse Oblige

This set offers Chungyun a considerable burst damage increase for his own rotations, as well as a teamwide attack buff, which generally all team members can make use of.

This set consists of the following:

  • Flower of Life: Royal Flora
  • Plume of Death: Royal Plume
  • Sands of Eon: Royal Pocket Watch
  • Goblet of Eonothem: Royal Silver Urn
  • Circlet of Logos: Royal Masque

This set of bonuses activate at the following marks:

2-Piece Bonus

This gives the user’s burst a + 20% DMG boost. And Chongyun’s Burst is essentially a triple miniature nuke. A 20% DMG boost will give an insane result, so this is not a bad option whatsoever.

4-Piece Bonus

This is a straight up upgrade to the 2-piece buff. This makes it so that whenever the character that has equipped the set uses their Elemental Burst, they increase all party members’ attack by 20% for a good 12 seconds.

However, remember to never use this set on more than one team member as the 4 piece effect does not stack.

How To Obtain

This 4-star/5-star rarity set can be obtained from the Clear Pool and Mountain Cavern. This is a Domain of Blessing located in Minlin in Liyue.

This set is also available in the Artifact Strong box. For every 3-Star Artifact converted, you receive one Noblesse Oblige artifact.

Emblem Of Severed Fate

This is recommended for relatively similar reasons as Noblesse. This will help Chongyun cover his energy needs.

This Set consists of the following:

  • Flower of Life: Magnificent Tsuba
  • Plume of Death: Sundered feather
  • Sands of Eon: Storm Cage
  • Goblet of Eonothem: Scarlet Vessel
  • Circlet of Logos: Ornate Kabuto

The set bonuses for these artifacts activate at the following marks:

2-Piece Bonus:

This bonus simply increases the Energy Recharge by 20%.

4-Piece Bonus:

The Elemental Burst DMG is increased by the 4-Piece Bonus by 25% of the Energy Recharge. The maximum amount of damage is, however, capped at 75%.

How To Obtain

This set comes in 2 rarities: 4-Star and 5-Star. Both these can be obtained by the Domain of Blessing namely Momiji-Dyed Court. This Domain is located in Inazuma.

Blizzard Strayer

This set is most optimal in freeze teams where Chongyun is the main driver of the team.

When an enemy is impacted by both Cryo and Frozen, the character using the 4-piece set of this artifact has an additional +40% CRIT Rate in addition to a boost to Cryo DMG.

The rest is self-explanatory as to why this fits a build with Chongyun as the main DPS carry

The set consists of the following:

  • Flower of Life: Snowswept Memory
  • Plume of Death: Icebreaker’s Resolve
  • Sands of Eon: Frozen Homeland’s Demise
  • Goblet of Eonothem: Frost Weaved Dignity
  • Circlet of Logos: Broken Rime’s Echo

The set bonuses for these artifacts activate at the following marks:

2-Piece Bonus

Using 2-Pieces will give the user with a Cryo Damage Bonus boost of 15%

4-Piece Bonus

The 4-Piece Bonus is a huge upgrade to the 2-Piece one. Aside from just a Cryo Damage boost, everytime the character with the set equipped attacks an enemy that is already affected by cryo, the CRIT rate is increased by 20%. And if the enemy is fully frozen already, the CRIT rate gets an additional 20% increase.

Again, this set is very helpful when Chongyun is the main DPS, not the enabler.

How To Obtain

This can be obtained through the Domain Blessing from the Peak of Vindagnyr.  This is located in Dragonspine, Mondstadt.

If your Chongyun has low talent levels, does not have at least C3 or does not have any good synergy from anemo shared units. It would be better to stack elemental mastery on my instead of a large CRIT ratio with attacks.

This is mostly because of the greater and more consistent damage from shatter with High Element Mastery and low investment.

What’s The Best Team for Chongyun?

With the introduction of numerous new characters, Chongyun has grown considerably stronger and more enjoyable. Due to this, he has recently been able to easily flex into many notable team comps.

Enabler/Sub-DPS Team Comp

Chongyun plays most optimally as a melt Enabler for a popular team called National Team. This comp needs a Bennett and Chongyun core, the other 2 characters can be any that fit the synergy according to your playstyle.

For the classic National Team, let’s consider the following team:

Bennett

Bennett acts as the main driver and battery for this team comp. Chongyun can supply cryo infusion and result with Bennett performing a lot of melt attacks.

Aside from that, Bennet also helps Chongyun by allowing him to perform a triple melt proc using his Burst. The reason for this is because Bennett’s Burst pyro application is strong enough to sustain 3 full melt procs from Chongyun’s Burst. Plus, the attack buff that Bennett provides.

All these make Bennett synergize very well with Chongyun.

Xingqiu

Xingqiu’s job as a 4-star Hydro Sword character is to give the squad an overall level of tankiness while acting as the only user of Hydro for elemental reactions.

These reactions of his are exceptionally helpful for the Chongyun Bennett combo.

Xingling

A 4-Star Pyro Polearm character. Xingling fits in this team comp as another Sub-DPS character. She amplifies Bennett’s purpose in the team which is to apply lots of pyro application.

Her Elemental Burst is especially good here as it retains its buffs even after switching, and has a wide area of effect.

Character Synergies

Character synergies in Genshin Impact refer to the way that certain characters’ abilities and elemental skills interact with one another in combat, often resulting in more powerful or efficient attacks.

Shenhe

Shenhe is a 5-Star Cryo character. She is helpful in freeze teams with Chongyun’s Cryo infusion.

Shenhe can increase Chongyun’s damage output as a main DPS even though she is more effective as a support than a main DPS.

Zhongli

Another 5-Star character with the Geo element. Zhongli is a hybrid character. He can lower the foes’ Elemental & Physical RES and has a shield for the active character’s protection.

Yelan

If you have a support character like Zhongli in your team, you can go for a DPS that can synergize with Cryo.

Yelan is a 5-Star Hydro character. Her Bursts are capable of executing an attack in unison with Chongyun’s Normal Attack. Additionally, Shattering frozen foes also deals bonus damage.

Chongyun: Ability Rundown

Chongyun is mostly used for his skill converting his Physical DMG into Cryo, and synergizing this with other character to trigger effects like melt or shatter.

However, he can also deal a decent amount of damage solo.

Here is a rundown of his abilities:

Normal Attack: Demonbane

Chongyun is able to perform a 4 strike combo with his claymore.

via Wiki

These attacks are quite slow and have low multipliers. So you will only rely on this as your main source of damage IF your team caters that heavily caters to his personal damage.

Here is how the damage numbers per hit look like for Demonbane:

Elemental Burst: Cloud-Parting

As mentioned earlier, Chongyun’s Elemental Burst is essentially a triple miniature nuke. Upon casting, Chongyun will summon three giant Cryo blades down on a target that each deal relatively mid damage without any constellations.

There are however some unique things to look at about this ability despite being a seemingly simple Aoe Cryo attack.

via Wiki

All three of the swords that Chongyun summons can trigger amplifying reactions separately, for example melt, in their respective situations. As mentioned earlier, Bennett’s Burst Pyro application can sustain the entirety of Chongyun’s Burst. This means Chongyun can proc melt once with every Cryo blade, potentially dealing insane amounts of damage.

It has a decent area of effect despite the animation being three blades sinking into a single target. It is a simple ability without any uses other than extra damage. But in the right situations, it can deal several times more damage than it is supposed to.

Chongyun – Ascension Passive Talents

via Wiki

Chongyun’s passive talents both buff his Elemental Skill. These will make his Skill deal more damage and improve him as an Enabler.

Steady Breathing – 1st Ascension Passive

This grants Chongyun 8% normal attack speed to characters wielding Swords, Claymores, or Polearms, in the affected area of the Skill.

This makes a significant difference with fast attack characters such as Kaeya and Rosaria in freeze teams.

Rimechaser Blade – 4th Ascension Passive

This passive causes a giant Cryo blade to strike the ground whenever his Skill’s Cryo field expires, dealing damage identical to his Skill’s damage.

On top of that, it also reduces the Cryo damage of enemies hit by the blade by 10% for 8 seconds.

It is a decent passive if you are using Chongyun in a team that can capitalize on the 10% Cryo resistance reduction.

Gallant Journey – Automatic Unlock

This Passive simply reduces the time consumed by 25% whenever one is exploring in Liyue.

Chongyun – Constellations

Moving on to the Constellations, they enhance his Talents to make his lackluster base kit a lot more viable.

Level 1 Constellation – Ice Unleashed

Chongyun’s C1 Constellation causes him to launch 3 Cryo blades after the final attack in his sequence. They deal a decent amount of damage, but this obviously requires you to complete Chongyun’s full attack sequence. This is usually less than ideal in almost all team comps.

This Constellation is usually ignored.

Level 2 Constellation – Atmospheric Revolution

The C2 Constellation is most likely one of the best 4 star enabler Constellations in the game due to its rare cooldown reduction properties.

This makes it to where all the Elemental Skills and Elemental Bursts that are cast while being within the Cryo field created by Chongyun’s Skill have their Cooldowns reduced by 15%.

Level 3 Constellation – Cloudburst

This simply adds 3 levels to Chongyun’s Elemental Burst, the max level of it by default being 15.

This alone does not give his Burst as much of a damage buff to make it viable alone without any sort of synergy.

Its combination with the C6 and some sort of external buff would make the extra 3 levels worth, but it is most definitely a good start towards Chongyun’s Burst damage.

Level 4 Constellation – Frozen Skies

Just gives Chongyun the ability to regenerate 1 Energy every time an enemy affected by Cryo is hit. This also does not take place constantly, and instead, every 2 seconds.

Just like the C1 Constellation, it can be completely ignored in most cases.

Level 5 Constellation – The True Path

Similar to the C3 Constellation it just adds 3 levels to Chongyun’s Skill instead of the Burst. The max level for this is also 15.

Level 6 Constellation – Rally Of Four Blades

This is another one of the better Constellations Chongyun has available. It gives Chongyun’s Burst a huge boost.

The Burst deals 15% more damage to enemies that have a lower HP of their max HP than Chongyun has at that time. Plus, the Burst also summons a fourth Cryo blade.

This Constellation plus the C3 Constellation, and some extra buffs such as Bennett’s attack buff and an artifact like Noblesse Oblige. Chongyun can increase his total damage contributed by quite a bit.

Chongyun: Frozen Ardor: Lore & Ability Showcase

Here is the official Chongyun showcase:

How To Obtain Chongyun?

Chongyun is obtainable from the following sources:

  • Constantly available from the gacha every time you wish on the Wanderlust Invocation banner.
  • The Beginners’ Wish until all 20 wishes have been made.

Also included in the wish pool of:

  • All Character Event Wishes
  • All Weapon Event Wishes

There is a higher chance to pull him wherever he is featured on a 5-Star character’s banner. So be sure to capitalize whenever that does happen.

Conclusion

To sum everything that has been stated so far, Chongyun has a very low play rate and is not part of the meta due to his niche kit and has considerably less team options than other characters. However, he is super enjoyable and super strong when done correctly.

When teamed up with the correct character, Chongyun can be a huge contributor to the team and a good carry if that is what you opted for.

Due to Chungyun’s Skill, he becomes a great Enabler for Bennett and gets a free pass into the national team, so giving it a try would not be a bad idea.

This is the build that we recommend for Chongyun in Genshin Impact. If you are interested in learning more about the game then you can check out our guide on how you can investigate the Mysterious Devices.
