Wolfenstein: Youngblood Stars On Female Protagonists Being A Big Deal

Wolfenstein: Youngblood Female Protagonists

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is out now and the game does not have one female protagonist but two of them. The two are twin daughters of BJ Blazkowicz. Having female protagonists might not be important to some people, other people do care about them. Shelby Young and Valerie Rose Loham, the voice actresses of Soph and Jess talked about why female protagonists in Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a big deal.

Young talked about how it makes sense to put the twins together. They are not strangers to one another and are twins. Being the daughters of BJ Blazkowicz make them badasses. Loham mentioned the following regarding the matter:

When I was younger I really only had like Lara Croft and the girls in Mortal Kombat, then eventually Metroid. I didn’t really have a funny, interesting, young female lead in anything growing up. It’s a big deal to me to know that Shelby and I are going to be that for young girls that are into gaming.

Young mentioned that more games are featuring female protagonists now. The Tomb Raider series is not the only one. Young mentioned that the game is still the same in many ways, it is a Wolfenstein game.

It is different because players experience the game from the eyes of two very different characters as compared to what they might be used to if they have played the older titles. Young went on to mention the following:

I love that there are more and more games coming out with female protagonists that are just strong and amazing and flawed and beautiful because women in life are all of those things and more. To see more and more representations of women that I can find a piece of myself in or who I can aspire to be is amazing. I’m already in my twenties, so I can’t imagine what that must be like for little girls growing up now.

Young mentioned that at its core, Wolfenstein: Youngblood is still similar to previous titles. The basic idea is that Nazis are bad and need to be killed. If you have played the previous titles then that might sound familiar.
