Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Characters

The Legend of Zelda universe has no shortage of fun and scrawny-looking characters. You have personalities that seemingly carry an entire circus with themselves. But at the same time, some are torn from their loved ones through destiny.

Some have a jaw-dropping tale to tell, and some are just beginning to make a name for themselves. While Zelda’s and Link’s fates are just as interconnected as ever, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild introduces us to some new faces, with each one having a new story to tell.

Amongst these character tropes, you will find a lot of relatable personalities like Prince Sidon or Kass just lighting your gameplay up from the sidelines. Needless to say, The Legend of Zelda is a pretty unique title.

With games dating as far as the 1980s, some side characters have still managed to secure a spot in the newer titles. While the same cannot be said about their personalities, it’s still fair to say they’ve retained most of their nostalgic tropes throughout the years. 

Main Characters In Breath Of The Wild

This list contains all the main characters of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild storyline. While some of them have a lighter impact on the story compared to others, their significance is what differentiates them from the side characters.

Having said that, here is a complete list of all the main characters present in the game:

1. Link

Link is the main protagonist of any The Legend of Zelda game – no doubt about it. He’s supposed to be the eternal hero that is tasked to save/follow Zelda – while she continues being a damsel in distress. 

The ‘Link’ in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is just one of the many reincarnations of the everlasting hero that continues this arc of protecting and chasing throughout the millennia. Saving the world? Protecting his hometown? Purging the evil from the world? He does everything in the light body of a teenager –  often seen in green attire. 

As a ‘player,’ you will be the one to pilot him throughout the game. Since Link is already an iconic character in the gaming industry, you’d be relatively familiar with him being misunderstood as ‘Zelda’ by many gamers. 

In terms of visuals, Link bears a strong resemblance to Peter Pan, who’s this flying magic elf fairy guy that wanders around the neverland. Link is generally the wielder of Triforce of Courage which signifies him as the chosen hero tasked to fight the onslaught of darkness. 

Personality

Link is a character that is lazy and easygoing at first. But throughout the game progression, he gains a sense of maturity that’s evident in his actions.

As a character, Link is often shrouded in mystery. He doesn’t talk much, prefers action over communication, and is a bit distant from the outside world. 

While The Breath of the Wild reasons that this phenomenon is due to his vessel being chosen as Master Sword, the real lore is still hidden behind curtains.

Link is just a spitting image of a hero character generally found in most fairy tails, just remove the talkativeness, and that’s pretty much it. 

2. Zelda

Like the concept of multiple Links, there are multiple Zeldas, the princess of Hyruie. Each Zelda’s incarnation has a slightly different personality that is intended to match the title’s theme. While she’s often portrayed as a young child or teenager, her wisdom is nothing to scoff at. 

Zelda knows the world’s ways and understands what’s right and what’s not. She is not an annoying brat that needs to be taken care of 24/7. While she’s not that strong in self-defense, you can still find a reliable personality within her. 

While she’s quite tolerant about her own well-being, just try to harm her allies, and you’ll see the worst side of her. Aside from the teenager trope, she is also quite commonly shown as a young adult itching to go out and adventure. 

Her keen insight and judgment are the sole reason why she’s such a good leader. Plus, her ability to learn spells and abilities is also well-appreciated in the royal family.

While some of her incarnations have been from a common background, Zelda is considered a princess in the game’s timeline. 

Personality

Zelda is caring, no doubt about it. Her wisdom and calmness often protrude through her physical demeanor. She is the type that forgives even her worst enemies but won’t leave a single stone unturned if someone close to her (specifically Link) is harmed. 

The game’s canon routes generally ship Zelda and Link together. However, there have been times when Zelda has gone out of her way to prove that. Her character is self-sacrificing, so she can be a handful to deal with at times. 

3. Calamity Ganon

This is a being of pure malice that has been transformed into a calamity-grade disaster. He has attacked and ravaged the lands of Hyrule before, and he will do it again.

While he’s initially sealed as a part of the prophecy, Link must get strong enough to defeat him before it’s too late. 

There are certain Sheikah that have started to worship the Calamity Ganon as their one true lord. Much of Sheikah tech was buried in the rivers of time due to the conflicts and indecision of the foolish leaders. 

With the inevitability of Calamity Ganon waking up, it was up to Zelda and Link to seal it back again, but when the world needed her the most, Zelda failed to fully awaken her sealing powers.

This not only strained her relationship with her father but also made her research worthless in front of the ruler’s eyes. 

Luckily, the Calamity Ganon is supposed to be this late-game entity that spreads its influence with each passing second.

Zelda’s weakened seal can only do so much, so it is up to Link to disrupt any shenanigans Calamity Ganon throws toward Hyrule.

4. Hylia

Hylia is considered a Goddess in the lore of The Breath of the Wild. Once the Hyrule was created by the Golden Goddesses, Hylia was the one given the Triforce in order to protect the area whilst the other Goddesses departed from the lesser world. 

Unfortunately, Demon King Demise got the news and decided to attack Hyrule. Running out of options, Hylia decided to gather the survivors on a piece of land and banish it to the heavens.

This group was the one being entrusted with the Triforce for their safety. 

After that, a great battle between Hylia and Demon King Demise ensued. The combined forces of the heavens, Gorons, Ancient Robots, and several other creatures managed to seal the Demon King.

Since Hylia was approaching her death due to lethal scars from the battle, she had to think fast. 

The goddess decided she would be reborn amongst the offsprings of the Sheikah tribe. While she made an awful lot of preparations to prevent the return of the Demon King, her future incarnation wasn’t enough.

So, she decided to create a hero, one that would lead the battle alongside her to protect the lands from the Demon King’s invasion.

Currently, every trial, level, and reward has been set by her that Link needs to overcome in order to become the true wielded of Master Sword. 

5. Daruk

Belonging to the Goron race, Daruk is a champion and one of Link’s primary allies. He’s the second Goron sworn brother to Link.

While their first encounter was anything but friendly, Daruk instantly sensed the heroic spirit within Link and made the decision to accompany him. 

He is a courageous individual that doesn’t hesitate to put his life on the line if the task requires it. Daruk is shown to be extremely dedicated to his trade and has sufficient leadership capabilities.

But when it comes to understanding the matters of communication, he becomes the densest creature on the planet. 

Luckily, he possesses a strong sense of comradeship. Therefore, you’d often find him talking heart to heart with Link.

While his Rock Roast addiction is sort of concerning, he’s an individual that’s true to himself about what he is and what he wants to be. 

While he has certain weaknesses, he still loves to put on a strong facade. However, his bad acting skills give it away quite easily.

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Daruks seems to have known many late-game secrets, so it’s best if you revisit him to complete that portion of the storyline. 

6. Mipha

Once a princess, Mipha met Link at the age of 4. While she did not have any attraction towards Link – only thinking of him as a swordsman capable of besting even adults, her feelings slowly began to shift without even realizing it.

However, she soon realized it and decided to spend more time with Link. 

Unfortunately for her, Link had already experienced a change in attitude after wielding Master Sword.

While she was still optimistic, everything halted when Link was appointed as Zelda’s appointed knight. Nonetheless, she never gave up.

Her family knew of her love for the Hylian knight, but it was at a time when she was appointed to pilot the Vah Ruta Divine Beast. 

She wanted to gift an armor to Link before her death, but as fate would have it, even that wasn’t possible.

Mipha finally met her eternal slumber while battling the Waterblight Ganon. Her sojutsu (the art of spear) was excellent, but her healing abilities were even stronger. 

Alas, destiny wasn’t very kind to her, and while she did help Link at several points in the story, her feelings weren’t really reciprocated.

Despite being shy and quiet, Mipha rose to the challenge when it mattered, and while that took her life, she finally managed to give Link a ray of hope in the despair-inducing battle. 

7. Old Man

Ever felt despair? This Old Man’s here to guide you! While every Zelda game features a unique Old Man with a distinct purpose.

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Old Man is the one responsible for guiding Link about the history of Sheikah. 

He resides in the Woodcutter’s House and is Link’s go-to for learning new knowledge about the world.

While this could range from Spicy Meat & Seafood Fry to the Pin feature of Sheikah Slate, everything comes with its destined time. So go, have a talk, you might gain something fruitful out of it. 

8. Urbosa

Being an ex-Gerudo chieftain, Urbosa was one of the few Champions of Hyrule and was well known for her wisdom and compassion.

Piloting the Divine Beast Vah Naboris, against the Calamity Ganon, she was one of the very first to lay down her sword upon King Rhoam’s call for aid. 

Urbosa hated Ganons on a personal level, so when the opportunity came knocking at her door, she particularly had no reason to refuse.

Besides, her people had suffered enough due to the political turmoil caused by the Ganons in the past; the chain needed to end here. 

Unfortunately, her heroics were short-lived as she was defeated in the battle against the Thunderblight Ganon.

However, that wasn’t the end of her story either; as it turns out, her spirit was still entrapped within the beast – which Link freed much later. 

Aside from the Divine Beast Vah Naboris, she had also wielded Scimitar of the Seven along with the Daybreaker shield in her glory days.

While her end was rather tragic, it’s safe to say she served as a great chieftain for her people and tribe. 

9. Revali

Despite having a deeply rooted rivalry against Hylian, Revali is one of Link’s close comrades – best known for being the Rito Champion.

He accepted King Rhoam’s invitation when the drafting request came forth. 

Piloting the Vah Medoh divine beast, there weren’t a lot of warriors better than him when it came to archery.

Despite showing a strong exterior on the outside, he was extremely prone to criticism –  and often questioned his own skills. 

He had a strong desire to prove himself as a warrior, and for that – he trained harder than anyone else.

While that practice bore fruit, his last moments were still full of regrets. Claiming that Link was the better man, Revali’s soul departed his body in the battle against the Windblight Ganon. 

Aside from the archery, Revali’s aerial skills were also a marvel to behold. Combine the two together, and there weren’t many warriors that could best him in a duel.

In his private diary, it was later revealed that Revali had no ulterior motives in approaching Link. He just wanted a friend, and he got one. Unfortunately, that relationship wasn’t long due to the workings of fate. 

His tribe still views him as the hero he aimed to be. All his struggles gave a meaningful conclusion to his life.

Plus, he was the one that fired a laser in the direction of Hyrule castle in order to weaken the power of Calamity Ganon. 

10. Purah

Purah is one of the few characters that have lived through the Great Calamity. She is a researcher at heart – and has made a plethora of contributions towards the Sheikah Ancient Technology.

Purah is a member of Zelda’s Research Team and has been referred to as a respected member of the Sheikah tribe by Zelda. 

Purah is quite playful in nature. While she does like to sow mischief, Purah is sensible enough to access the situation at hand.

She has been a strong unit of Zelda’s Research team and has helped Link and Zelda throughout the entire story.

Her examinations and theories are on-point quite often. Plus, she’s an interesting fellow to hang out with. 

11. Paya

Paya is one of the many suitors of link. She gets flustered quite easily while talking to him and is often seen stuttering her words.

Despite being the granddaughter of Impa,  Paya has been one of the cornerstones of her family. 

She is just a young maiden looking to learn about the world. While she hasn’t made any significant contributions to the plot, her support for Elder Impa is integral in almost everything.

Being the sole inheritor of Impa’s knowledge, we can assume she will grow up to be a fine researcher.

12. Impa

Being a recurring character in the Legend of Zelda series, there are not a lot of people that are unknown to her ways.

In the Breath of the Wild, she is depicted as this old-but-wise elder granny that governs and advises a small village of Sheikah. 

She has been an integral part of Zelda’s research team and has been knowing about the Great Calamity events. Impa is the one that protects the Sheikah heirloom.

While her family has waited for several generations to hand it to the true hero, the tradition has ended with her after Link was chosen as the master sword. 

13. Yunobo

It’s hard to be as clumsy as Yunobo; a descendant of Darul needs to be sharp and courageous. Yet somehow, Yunobo finds himself to be the complete opposite of that, going as far as to cover his ears while cowering in fear at the sight of a small monster/enemy. 

Despite all of his behavioral shortcomings, Yunobo is one of the few that can utilize Daruk’s Protection with the same potency.

Aside from Link, Yunobo is potentially the only person that can control and pacify the Divine Beasts if it comes to it. 

Unfortunately, his cowardness and weak-heartedness make him unsuitable as a champion. Thus, the title had to be awarded to someone more fitting.

This, in turn, also means that Yunobo was unable to be the main guy in the battle against Calamity Garon. 

Despite wielding the Boulder Breaker, Yunobo’s skill and proficiency with it are questionable. Therefore, he presumably is unfit to be something more than just a pseudo-main character.

In an ironic turn of events, Yunobo not only allows Link to secure Van Rudania, but also helps him defeat the Fireblight Ganon. 

14. Makeela Riju

Being a direct descendant of the royal chieftain’s blood, Riju is the one that took the lead over the people left behind by Urbosa in her final battle. Unfortunately, Riju is quite young for a chieftain – and has only been positioned in the role after the previous chieftain died unexpectedly. 

This has caused some of the Gerudo to have unfavorable opinions about her legitimacy and leading ability.

While Makeela Riju has shut her heart to such criticism, she keeps a Chief’s diary with her that contains her real thoughts. 

In the series of quests, Link works hard to gain Riju’s approval. In return, Riju protects Link from electrocution through the Vah Naboris.

Consequently, she guides him through the sandstorm and becomes his sworn ally.

While her age and strength aren’t sufficient for her to be jumping into the fray, she still wishes luck to Link for his incoming battles. 

Makeela Riju is exceptionally wise for her age and is aware of the faction that doubts her ability to govern. Nonetheless, she wants to prove her ability; not only to them but to the entirety of her subjects. 

Luckily, she does not follow the general Gerudo doctrine and is fairly tolerant of men. That’s the only reason why Link was able to talk to her despite his scrawny crossdress disguise. 

15. Teba

Teba is a warrior both from soul and body. He is Saki’s husband and is rather disciplined and serious in nature. He’s one of the few that’s not envious of Link’s fighting prowess but rather respects him as a fellow warrior. 

While he does want his son to be as much of a warrior as Revali, he doesn’t seem too obsessed with the idea.

Teba is rather confident in his own skillset and believes that everything can be achieved as long as one works hard for it.

This ideology of his has made him into a fine flyer, but much of what he’s capable of is yet to be seen. 

He’s not overly courteous and believes that chatter should only be present to a meaningful degree. Regardless of his beliefs, he’s a respectable member of the Rito warriors and has been a caring husband.

Not much is known about his relationship with his son; but by judging his attitude, we can assume that it’s anything but bad. 

16. Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule

As the name suggests. Rhoam Bosphoramus is the King of Hyrule and the father of princess Zelda. Unfortunately, he isn’t on the best terms with his daughter due to the issues regarding her skill awakening. 

Rhoam has suffered many shocks during his lifetime. With the death of queen Hyrule, everything began to fall apart for him.

However, he stood strong regardless. He had an insane amount of trust in Zelda’s leadership skills and believed she could be the one to restore Hyrule to its former glory. 

Once Zelda was despairingly made aware that her powers might never awaken, Rhoam was the one to mend their strained relationship by offering encouragement to Zelda.

He was never a bad person at heart, but as a King, one needs to be stern and upright.

King Rhoam was the one orchestrating most of the events during the battle with Ganon. He sent help signals to his ally warring tribes to aid them in this moment of distress.

While most of them accepted it without hesitation, there were some ready to desert the call at a moment’s notice. 

Unfortunately, King Rhoam met his slumber when the Calamity Garon attacked Hyrule castle. He, along with many others, lost their lives while trying to maintain order.

His death proved to be a big shock to Zelda – who, admittedly, broke down openly while grieving the death of her beloved father. 

17. King Dorephan

Being the King of Zora, King Dorephan has ruled over the Zora’s domain for over a century. His reign has been considered the longest among the known Kings, and he’s the father of Mipha and Sidon. 

King Dorephan is the one that wrote the history of the Zora people on the ten stone monuments. He possesses supernatural strength and can best a Guardian in a short span of time.

Dorephan doesn’t need any weapons to accomplish this, just allow him to use his hands, and watch as the Guardians are sent flying one by one. 

Seeing Link back again alive and healthy was quite a shock to him since he was presumed dead after the Calamity Goron’s attack. Nonetheless, he provided all the support necessary to combat that disaster once more. 

He has muscle, no doubt about it, but his wisdom is the scariest part of him. Despite being knowledgeable about the Zora history, King Dorephan has never allowed himself to grow complacent. 

18. Prince Sidon

Being the best swimmer in the entirety of Zora, Prince Sidon’s physique and attitude are just as cheerful as his personality.

While he didn’t know Link at first, his frequent conversation about Mipha eventually reminded him of the events from 100 years ago.

Regarding putting up a facade, Sidon can look extremely serious at first glance but can mellow down depending on the person he’s talking with.

While he’s quite similar to his father due to his unnatural strength, he’s not as ambitious and just wants his people to strive. 

Due to his handsome appearance, Prince Sidon is quite famous amongst the female Zora and is often accompanied by female cheers whenever he decides to head out.

Despite not being as level-headed as his father, Sidon knows when to attack and when to take a step back. 

He’s quite confident in his abilities and is capable of many jaw-dropping feats. Most of his kind believe that princess Mipha’s death was a plotted murder by Hylians.

However, Sidon and his father believe otherwise. That’s the sole reason why Sidon is exceptionally welcoming towards Link. 

19. Robbie

Doctor Robbie is another Sheikah Ancient Technology researcher that worked with Impa as a member of Zelda’s team.

His cockroach-like physique has granted him a lot of benefits, along with the ability to survive and outlive the calamity 100 years ago. 

Luckily, he has not wasted this time, and as a result –  Robbie has become quite proficient in Sheikah tech. Unfortunately, he’s more inclined towards the mechanical aspect than anything else. Despite his age, Robbie hasn’t forgotten the events of the past.

Therefore, he does all he can to help Link in the upcoming battle. 

Unfortunately, that help is only in the form of information, as his research was mainly targeted toward ancient beasts. Regardless, Robbie is the spitting image of Purah and is often known to get ahead of himself. 

Moreover, Robbie is also a major simp towards his wide Jerrin, so it’s quite common to see his actions being influenced by the will of his wife. Luckily, he has a gentle yet righteous heart.

Therefore, he’ll do whatever it takes to restore Hyrule to its former glory. Unfortunately though, he’s way past his prime to do anything now. 

20. Great Deku Tree

This is a tree that has been present in the story of many Zelda and Link reincarnations.

While its personality and purpose have varied throughout the millennia, the Great Deku Tree is still someone worthy enough to be an integral part of the story. 

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the tree is tasked to protect Master Sword. In fact, Great Deku Tree makes Link go through a series of trials in order to gauge if he’s worthy or not – even after confirming his identity. 

The Great Deku Tree is also a massive source of information and is the one (besides King Hyrule) to make Link remember his past by showing visions.

It doesn’t seem to have any specific personality. Rather, it just does what it needs to do. 

However, the Great Deku Tree does complement Link’s smile – saying that it was something as bright as the sun and that it wishes to see that smile once more.

Luckily, it has all the time in the world after the conquest of the Calamity Goron is finished. 

21. Hestu

Found on the north of the Dueling Peaks Stable, Hestu is someone that carries a bunch of maracas with him.

Unfortunately for him, the priceless possessions get stolen by fellow Koroks. He is the one responsible for upgrading Link’s Inventory. 

While Hestu is diligent in his work, he’s a unique creature whose aloof to the matters of the world. The forest is his domain, and he is one with the forest.

While he offers decent compensation for the Korok Seeds, that’s about all he does, so you won’t be finding him unless you want to upgrade your inventory. 

22. Monk Maz Koshia

This is a DLC-linked character, so chances are that you’ve never heard of him. Initially found as a boss, Monk Maz Koshia is a guide that makes Link go through a bunch of annoying trials.

Upon completion, his job is to guide you to the place of resurrection where the final trial will take place. 

He’s not really relevant to the actual plot, but in order to obtain Master Sword Zero, you would need to seek his guidance, as he is the sole protector of the knowledge.

Despite ramming Link down with a barrage of blows, Monk Mas Koshia is Link’s ally and only wishes for him to grow stronger.

While he’s not really mentioned in the main story, his contributions to defeating the Calamity Goron are quite high nonetheless. 

23. Master Kohga

Kohga is the prime example of ‘thinking with your muscles.’ He’s informal, messy, and has a short temperament.

Despite all that, he’s ultimately the leader of the Yiga Clan. And despite his shortcomings. his tribe puts a great deal of faith in him. So when push comes to shove, he needs to show up. 

It’s just that the tribe is so lazy that the push seemingly never comes for them. Therefore, Kohga can just spend his time lazying around by making his loyal subordinates do chores for him.

Since he belongs to a tribe that follows the will of Ganon, he has more-than-often tried to be a thorn in Link’s path – going as far as to open a bounty on his head. 

Luckily, fanaticism is only limited to his followers. Otherwise, the world would’ve been a much more chaotic place.

While Kohga doesn’t even have a shred of common sense, his dumb luck always seems to strike the target.

Besides, his tribe members seem to have sexual attraction toward him – so it’s better to leave them to their devices. 

24. Kass

Appointed as the official bard of the game, Kass’ job is limited to telling Link about the shrine location (as instructed by his elusive master) and singing occasional songs for him.

His skill with the accordion is quite literally music to one’s ears.

While his skill is not to be underestimated, the most fearsome aspect of his is the knowledge Kass has amassed throughout his journeys.

His wish is to play songs once the world has been liberated from the grip of the Calamity Goron. 

Kass is the only guy to identify Link from appearance alone due to him being in possession of the Picture of the Champions.

Aside from that, he’s just a walking library of songs. So, do drop by if you’re in the mood for some continental specialties.

All in all, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild houses some insanely interesting characters to look forward to.

While some of them are rather clumsy, others are as energetic as ever. However, one thing that binds them together is the dedication to their craft and the Calamity Goron. 

Interacting with these characters and hearing their ends of the story as Link can help alleviate some of that gritty boredom. Plus, this kind of interaction is what pushes the story forward.
